Jeffrey Travis and Flatland

Jeffrey Travis is the screenwriter and director of Flatland: The Movie, starring Martin Sheen and Kirsten Bell. Released in 2007, it’s based on the book Flatland by Edwin Abbott. At the 2011 NCTM Annual Meeting, Travis delivered the opening keynote, during which he discussed the math and geometry required to create 3D movies; Flatland: 3D is currently in post-production.

Travis is an engineer by training and a certified math geek, though his talents have taken him into movie direction. The first film he made, a three‑minute short starring his son Aidan, won numerous awards and was shown at over 30 film festivals. It’s worth 180 seconds of your time…

Flatland: 3D is scheduled for release in October 2011, with primary distribution to IMAX theaters.
